Keep it simple

Romans 1:16-17

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

Have you noticed that the more complicated a thing is, the less well it usually works?

If I ask you to explain your business idea and you cannot do it in one simple sentence, take it from me, you’re not ready to float it yet, because it won’t catch on! In the same way, if I ask you about your most significant relationship and your answer is, “It’s complicated!” then I put it to you that you don’t actually have a relationship, you have a “situation!”

For anything to work it must be simple; only simple things are truly profound. The gospel of Jesus Christ is so simple that the sophisticated and the educated trip over it, but if you are willing to come like a little child you will be able to uncover its mysteries and enjoy the depths of its liberating power.

The gospel is simply this: humans are wrong but God is right; therefore we must stop asserting our independence from Him in contempt of His goodness, and receive Him as Lord of our lives.

In the gospel of Jesus Christ, a unique type of righteousness is revealed. Every human being has their own idea of what it means to be “right”, but none of them even starts to measure up to God’s own righteousness. When we receive the gospel, we stop trying to be right by our own methods, and instead we accept by faith the very best type of righteousness, which is God’s. In effect we give up trying to impress ourselves, others and God by our own “rightness,” and we accept His instead.

Religious people don’t like the gospel of righteousness by faith, because it is an affront to their belief that they are better than others based on their righteous actions. Righteousness by faith puts everyone at the same level, because we all get our righteousness as a gift.

When we first hear it, the gospel an affront because it smacks against our pride and our desire for independence and mastery. But here’s the profundity of it: the gospel is not a means by which God puts us down, it is His genius for lifting us up, since when we receive His righteousness we receive His power and ability to become truly maximized in who we were always supposed to be. Now mastery and fulfillment in life are no longer just a dream, they are our destiny.

It’s simple and it works! Let someone know the simplicity of the gospel today!

Heavenly Father, by faith I declare that you are the Lord of my life. I will not stand in contempt of you, but I gladly receive your gift of righteousness. I know that as I do, I also receive the power I need to rise up and be everything I am supposed to be in life.

You will never oppress me or rob me of my dignity and worth. Your plan is to do me good all the days of my life. Thank you that salvation is working in me and through me today.

Right now I ask you to bring someone across my path who is ready to hear and receive the simple message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am excited to present the truth to them and to witness their lives change. Thank you, Lord!

I love the truth. The language of God is the truth. What we preach is Jesus Christ not ourselves. The righteousness of God which is by faith. May God bless you more and more Pastor in Jesus’name.
