Why I get excited about the true gospel

Romans 1:16-17

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

Have you ever heard it said at a funeral, “We know where he is right now, because we know the kind of life he led”?

That is a complete distortion of the truth of the gospel. We know where a person who passed on is right now because of what they BELIEVED about Jesus Christ, not because of what kind of life they lived.

Anyone who believes that way is not believing the true gospel. They are holding onto a gospel of works, when the true gospel is a gospel of grace.

It’s a natural drive to want to be able to defend our idea of being right, and to be proven right in any given situation. The fact is that every human being strives to work out and establish their idea of the right stance to take in relationships, in business and in society at large. All of us have a natural desire to promote our own righteousness!

Yet in the gospel of Jesus Christ there is a revelation of the righteousness of God. The gospel has nothing to say about your own righteousness; it is all about God’s righteousness, which HE offers as a gift of His grace. Will you accept the righteousness that God offers?

Did you know that God has nothing more to say about your sin either? He has already dealt with it and judged it in the body of His Son. He’s waiting for all of us to come to the realization that our own jacked-up ideas on being right won’t hold up, because even if we can fool someone else, we can’t boast about our righteousness before Him; He can see the real story!

It is written in the gospel that the righteous shall live by faith. In other words, we will understand that we stand right before God apart from what we do. We will get it that we are in on another man’s righteousness, not our own. That other man is Jesus.

There is nothing more exciting to me than this wonderful gospel! When we accept it, we do two things: we show that we are not ashamed of this gospel, and we tap into its power to be made whole. If there is one thing that God is concerned with, it is that we be made whole, having nothing missing and nothing broken. Now that is shouting ground!

Wholeness is the design of the gospel. Right believing will produce wholeness: it will produce a balanced, full and wholesome lifestyle.

Decide to believe right today. Lay down your confidence in what you have done, and place your confidence in what HE has done. Accept the righteousness of Jesus Himself, the gift of God’s grace, and enjoy your exciting life of being made whole.

Thank you for the true gospel of Jesus Christ that has been revealed to my understanding. Thank you that I can get in on the basis of what Jesus did when I lay down my confidence in what I have done. Thank you that I can receive my wholeness as I place my confidence in Him.

Right now I declare that I am not ashamed of the fact that I can never assert my own righteousness, but instead I hold onto the righteousness that was given to me by God as a gift. I can never look down on another human being as long as I live, because I am no more right than anyone else, but instead I rejoice in the gospel of grace that is powerful enough to make me whole. In Jesus’ name!
