And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
When was the last time you heard someone preach the Word in such a way that your jaw dropped and you marveled at the gracious words that they were saying?
When Jesus spoke, that was the reaction He provoked. His message was so full of how good God is and how much He is on our side, that the people were startled and amazed. They thought God was their enemy and yet the way Jesus talked about Him revealed to them a very different picture.
Nowadays Christians don’t want to go to church because they are already feeling bad about themselves and they know that when they get there, the pastor will finish them off. They will leave feeling guiltier and more hopeless than when they came.
All of us have a responsibility to change the spirit of everything we are engaged in. Christians, both in the pulpit and in the wider body, should all carry such a grace that people want to be around us because we emanate goodness and grace. God takes care of us and our demeanor needs to let people know it! Our message and our being must be one and the same.
Just hanging out with us people will know that something is up. Jesus was an amazing guy who provoked the spirit of wonder and we can too. It is the most powerful testimony of all. In fact, we can preach what we know, but we will never produce what we are not.
Take note of the spirit you operate in today. It is easy to slip into a worldly way of behaving, like the disciples who cut off the centurion’s ear to register their anger at Jesus’ arrest. If we cut someone off, we might appear to get the job done, but we don’t understand that the spirit we are operating in is counterproductive.
When we are clothed with grace, God will raise up people to help us. People will go out of their way to make room for us and to send for us. Others may need to fill in applications and wait in line, but we will be sought after.
Believe God to be clothed in grace today and then put on a spirit of goodness as you go out among people. Watch God use your life like never before for His glory, and enjoy the rewards!
Heavenly Father, thank you for the grace to handle every person and every situation with your goodness today. I believe you that gracious words will be on my tongue today and people will want to have me around because of the atmosphere I create.
My message and my demeanor will be one and the same today. I put on goodness, gentleness and kindness and I avoid strife and upset because you handle all my battles, not me. Thank you, Lord!
