1 Timothy 6: 17-19
Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Did you know that you could store up for yourself a good foundation for your life in the age to come? The way you and I are going to do this, is by being rich in good works.
Every believer is called to be rich in good works. This means that when God increases us in any arena of life, we aren’t to start becoming unpleasant to know, and we aren’t to start tripping every time someone dares to touch our expensive stuff that God has given us. A wealthy believer should be at least as nice after God increases him as he was before, and in fact he should really be nicer than ever, since the purpose for God blessing us is so that we can be a blessing in turn.
When God blesses us, we are supposed to turn to someone and pass on the blessing. We are supposed to lift someone else up, or help someone, just as God helped us. This is what it means to be rich in good works.
Are you rich in net worth, but not in good works?
God gives us everything richly to enjoy, but these things will not affect our eternity if we squander them on ourselves. If we will use our collateral to bless others and be good to them, however, we store up reward for our selves in our “Heavenly Account.”
When Paul was talking to the Philippians in Philippians 4:15-17, he spurred them on to be a generous church, “Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account...”
Spending our resources of time, energy, skills, money, possessions and knowledge with others, feels like we are losing out, and even being naïve and somewhat foolish to give our assets away so easily. But we are not losing; we are actually transferring them to our Heavenly account.
When we die as believers, we will not face the Great White Throne where sinners are judged, but, by trusting in the blood of Jesus to seal our salvation, our we will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ. At that seat there will be a recognition of the impact we made through our kindness, goodness and care, during our time on Earth.
The good we will do in this life will eventually follow us, and our Heavenly Reward will be on the basis of what we transferred by concerning ourselves with being rich in good works. Notice that our good works will mean nothing unless we have first received the free gift of righteousness by faith, but if we are saved every time we share and distribute, we lay it up for ourselves in the age to come in what the Bible calls our Heavenly Account.
How is your Heavenly Account? Are you only laying up riches for yourself on Earth, or are you interested in doing something that translates into eternal significance?
Despite some prevalent trends in preaching in this generation, God is still just as interested in you being a blessing as He is in blessing you. You should be ready to give and willing to share, so that your foundation in the heavenly realms will be strong and sure.
Every man’s work will be tried by fire and the worthless things will be burnt away; only the real good works will remain in the form of a reward with your name on it.
Why not get busy today; bring up plenty of instances where you can invest something in your Heavenly Account? Remember, we are blessed in order to be a blessing. Make your future sure today, In Jesus’ name
Heavenly Father, I am so excited to be able to participate in your investment scheme for the age to come. Thank you that every time I bless someone through good works I am storing up the blessing for myself in Heaven.
Thank you that no good thing I have ever done has been wasted and you haven’t overlooked a single time when I was a blessing to someone. Now Lord, increase me more and more so that I can make an even bigger impact on this world and on the foundation I am laying for myself in Heaven.
I declare by faith today: I am rich in possessions and in everything that is good that I can enjoy in this world, and I am also rich in good works. In Jesus’ name!
