Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith
Picture yourself in a huge stadium, out there on the running track, while a huge crowd shouts encouragement and cheers you on. The race is exactly what you have trained for; running it gives you great satisfaction, and you have your eyes firmly fixed on the finish line, so that even in the toughest stretch, you still have energy and focus. You are out in front and as you consider the finish line, you have strong confidence that you will make it and win.
That is the picture that God gives us of our lives. We are not survivors, we are winners. We are not weak, we have the ability to endure and press through. We don’t just start well, we end brilliantly!
In fact, Jesus fully intends to finish what He started with you and me. We don’t ever need to worry about our future because Jesus is just as good a finisher as He is author. Even if we take a detour, or miss a turn, He is able to keep us from falling and to present us blameless in the final outcome. You and I WILL stand on the podium to receive our reward!
I don’t know about you, but there has been a lot of trouble I could have gotten into if He hadn’t kept me! Sometimes, if it was up to us, we would go there, but He keeps us. We are His joy, and He is faithful to complete what He started when He chose us, just as He completed His purpose for those who died in faith. They haven’t just disappeared, they watch to cheer us on and together with them we will be made perfect. We are part of a great company of men and women who press forward for the coming of the Kingdom of God.
We must keep our eyes on the faithfulness of our God. If we fix our hope on people, on money, on medical science or anything else whatsoever, we will hesitate and stumble. When Peter took His eyes off Jesus, that was when he started to sink. Notice he only just started! As soon as He fixed his gaze back on Jesus, He was back on it! Even if you’ve lost focus, the moment you put it right, you are back on track.
Make a decision today to lay aside every weight of weariness and worry, and take pleasure in your set race today. The race that Jesus set for you is tailor made. If you feel like you are running someone else’s race because there is no joy in it for you, believe God that you will discover what He has prepared for you. He is on your side, and He has set you up to win!
Heavenly Father, thank you for my set race. I am so thankful that you have prepared works in advance for me to do, as I serve you in this world. Lead me into all that you have planned for me. I set my eyes on you, the author and finisher of my life. What you have started well, you will finish even better.
Every day you keep me from falling. Thank you for holding me fast and leading me in right choices. I look forward to standing on the winner’s podium with you! Thank you, Lord!
