No more holy handkerchiefs

Romans 10:2-3

…they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.  For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

Zeal without knowledge is the curse of the church.

Folk go to church to feel better or to be entertained, yet they also love God and want to see Him act on their behalf. They accept that salvation is by faith  in regards to being born again and yet they live and operate in their own righteousness.

There are only two types of righteousness available; if we don’t submit to God’s righteousness, we will seek to establish our own. Every person alive is operating in one of the two types. If you are standing in God’s presence feeling bad, that is a sure sign that you are operating in self righteousness.

In the gospel, God reveals that he is not angry with us any more. He is not dishing out punishments or bringing judgments on us. He does not condemn the world or hold our sins against us. We are invited to stand before Him without fear, guilt, shame, inferiority and condemnation; and if we can accept that there is nothing left for us to do to please God, we can have the righteousness of God.

Religion, however, will tell us that we have to do so many things to get God to move on our behalf. This month we must fast for two weeks, next month we must pray the prayer of Jabez, and after that we must place holy handkerchiefs under our loved ones’ pillows so that they can be saved.

Church folk have come up with so many routines and rituals, so many rules and standards that we have been forced to become dehumanized in church in the name of trying to be perfect. We have insisted on so many theatrical demonstrations and yet there have been no results. We’ve been working hard, with nothing to show for it.

It’s time for us to get a revelation of what it means to submit to the righteousness of God. This righteousness is so huge that we will literally have to make a decision to submit to it, or it won’t happen. It will enable us to serve God with gladness without being slaves to good works.

Get the religion out of you today!
